11:03 pm - research dilemma - sorry for the crossposting on smithies

ailika20
holla,
so for my sociology research class, we are required to do our own personal projects, and i decided to look into the unity organizations at Smith, and whether or not they are still important, relevant and why many people choose to or choose not to, specifically not to, join them.
i've already had several interviews with members within unity organizations, but i'm unsure of how to approach people who are not involved. i'm scared to make judgments based on their appearance or name that they can be a part of an unity organizations, but are not. how should i do this? should i just send emails to people whom i think would be good, and hope they aren't terribly offended? i don't want to assume too much into people's identities, and how they choose to relate, become involved, and spend their time at Smith.
HELP!

and also, is anyone reading this interested in being interviewed? or can offer any additional feedback or insight into smith unity orgs?

audthebod
Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone would like to host for me for an overnight when I visit Smith. The overnight would be on the night of April 12th, and I would visit the college during the day on April 13th.

I know this is a bit of an odd request as…I don’t know any of you. But, I am really interested in getting the real feel of Smith and what better way to actually hang out w/ a student?

I am very relaxed and would be up for mostly anything. I would bring my own sleeping bag and pillow, pay for all my own stuff (like dinner or whatever) and…be eternally grateful! The college does sometimes arrange overnights, but as a junior, this isn’t an option for me. I won’t be able to visit again until I am accepted and officially walk through the doors as a freshman, so really wanted to do this now.

To let you get a better idea of who I am (as my LJ doesn’t say much): I am looking for a liberal arts education and really want a college experience that includes great professors, small classes, open-mindedness, and a push for students to take action in their education and world. Some favorite TV shows include: Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Prison Break (mmm…sexy guys), and Desperate Housewives. I am involved with GSA and Drama at school, and want to have a bunch of fun!

Other than that, I’m not much of a partier and would probably have to stay with someone female, as my mom is coming with me.

If not an overnight…perhaps grabbing lunch that day? Or maybe I could just come and talk to you? Coffee on campus or at a nearby café?

I’d really appreciate anything.

Audrey

p.s. Also, so this isn’t really creepy, I can provide a picture so you kind of just get a sense of who I am. Oh! And if there any questions, please email: smartypiebrown@hotmail.com

6:44 pm - Art History/Conservation Internship

duedate
I have been in communication with the direct of the the New Orleans Conservation Guild about a summer internship (for Praxis) at their studio in N.O. They do restoration of paintings, stone, wooden artifacts, paper/books/documents, antique furniture, frames, guilded pieces, glass, crystal, etc., both for the public and for museums. The director seems very nice, and excited about having interns from Smith, and in light of damages due to Hurricane Katrina, they can use the help. It seems like the experience will be very hands on and educational, and a good opportunity to meet people; apparently there are visiting conservators there now from Portugal, Italy, and the UK, and the director thinks that a whole conservation school from the UK will be visiting this summer. They often have interns, and have experience finding housing for them (though we would have to pay the rent), and there is housing in proximity to the studio so that transportation would not be a problem. From what I can gather, it is in a district a mile or two away from the French Quarter that has been in a sort of renaissance (according the articles about the studio on their webpage), now home to many artists. I don't know how the neighborhood has changed since the hurricane, but the Conservation Guild seems to be very much up and running. Additionally, I'm told that businesses in New Orleans are really desparate for workers right now, and are paying $9-$10/hour for jobs that normally pay minimum wage, so I might get a part time job to supplement Praxis.

I was wondering if any of you might be interested in this sort of internship. I'm not from New Orleans, and am not familiar with the area, and I think it would be nice to have a group of three or four so that we can help this organization out, hang out together, and most importantly, live together to cut living costs and feel safe. Please email or call me (x5524) if you'd like to know more, get in touch with the director, or meet up and talk to me about doing this!

3:34 pm - Sorry for the cross-posting... New community!

milesofsky
I've created a new community, smithies_again, for those of us who left Smith and have returned, are returning, or at the least are considering doing so.

On leave? Withdrawn? Kind of want to come back? Really want to come back? Declared you'd never come back but then find yourself still claiming to be "just on extended leave" sometimes? Readjusting to college life? Readjusting to Smith life? Waiting on your readmittance application results? Staring at a blank application, wide-eyed? Does the fall chill make you miss Northampton? This community is for you! Allies and words of wisdom very welcome :)

It's a terrifying/thrilling/scary/exciting thing to come back, isn't it? Let's talk.

Is anyone willing or already planning a trip to Boston on October 11? I'm trying to find a way to Boston University to see Harlan Ellison lecture at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center (5:30 pm). I'll pay gas money both ways and provide specific directions to the center.

Thanks!
